Hands holding eInstruction clicker"Clickers" enable more interaction between students and faculty in classroom learning situations. Clickers are keypads which wirelessly transmit student input to a receiver connected to a computer used by an instructor. Typically, instructors use this sort of response system to present questions interspersed throughout a presentation, receiving immediate feedback about student skills and knowledge. Clickers may also be used for attendance/participation points, quizzes, group activities, and more.

Faculty and students are finding clickers can help make class sessions more engaging, relevant, and beneficial! In a survey of over 3500 CPS-using students at SDSU in the fall of 2007:

  • 79% of students said that class clicker usage helps them to feel more involved in class
  • 88% of students said that class clicker usage makes them more likely to attend class
  • 84% of students said that their professor asks clicker questions which are important to their learning
  • 88% of students said that class clicker usage makes them more likely to respond to a professor's questions

Adoption of eInstruction clickers since the standardization decision in 2006 has expanded rapidly.

Clicker adoption: fall 2006 - 10 faculty, 2997 course capacity. spring 2006 - 13 faculty, 4679 course capacity. fall 2007 - 31 faculty, 8862 course capacity. spring 2008 - 38 faculty, 10504 course capacity. fall 2008 - 54 faculty, 11983 course capacity

SDSU standardized on the eInstruction CPS radio frequency (RF) response system in summer of 2006, after a selection process which included input from SDSU faculty and students, as well as from other universities with more experience with response systems. The eInstruction system enables students to purchase their clickers in the bookstore and use them in any class where the faculty member wants to use a response system.
